#Viral: How TikTok made songs topped the music charts

#Viral: How TikTok made songs topped the music charts

Dance craze is not the only trend you will find in your For You Page (FYP) anymore, but also songs that will suit your playlist. FYP is the page where TikTok recommends you content or like “Feed” for Facebook. With the rise of views comes the rise of streams for artists, especially those who are just starting their careers or not trendy anymore.

Take the song “Jopay” as an example which has become recently popular through a TikTok edit of its intro but did you know that the song was released by the Filipino band Mayonnaise way back 2004 but still making it to the music charts?

1. Be the go-to song

Due to its immense popularity as the hugot music in TikTok videos, solo artists like Zack Tabudlo who debuted in 2018 landed in the top spot of the music charts with his song “Binibini”.

Same goes for his song “Pano” which was not only the longest #1 in Spotify’s Top 50 Philippine Chart but also greatly listened to other Southeast Asian countries like Thailand which proves that despite the language barrier, social media indeed break through any boundaries.

2. Groove to the music

Dance choreography, popularly known as “DC,” also plays a role in putting a song in the music charts.

You may have definitely danced to the 2020 song “Marikit” by Juan Kyle and Kyle Caplis during the early days of the pandemic. Big thanks to the DC created by Filipino dancer Mannex Manhattan, the song topped the chart with 15 million streams and garnered 250 million views in TikTok in the same year.

Other examples were the unexpected hype on the 2016 song “Byahe” by John Roa. “Byahe” became popular in 2021 when a TikTok creator created a choreography which left John Roa astonished as the 4-year-old song was in the top list.

3. Join the hype

The song “BMW” by the OPM rapper Because, featuring R&B singer Leslie, became a viral dance challenge in 2021. According to Spotify, the single, who was released later in 2020, had a daily stream of 240,000. The song even brought the rapper as the top local Hip Hop artist.

Even KPOP groups promote their latest single by doing their catchy choreos on TikTok like how “FEVER” by the Korean boy band Enhyphen was followed by many users. Some dance videos went viral as those groups collaborated with other Korean artists that their fans did not expect to see.

4. Never too old to be in the music charts

Even after nine years it was released, Korean artist Dynamic Duo’s AEAO reached the fifth spot of the Hip-Hop Tracks chart for Apple Music as a result of many Tiktok users singing and using the song.

A 2021 music perception research by MRC Data revealed that 63 percent of their participants got introduced to a song they heard for the first time while the rest shared that they got to know the artist by coming across their song in their FYP.

5. Expect the unexpected

With over a 1 billion active users, TikTok became a platform for artists to rise and land a spot in the music charts. It has been an effective platform to promote music especially for anyone regardless of the language they speak.

Some songs are being mashed-up together or released its own speed up version. Yet, none of this determines the time when a song, old or new, will dominate the music charts.
