Reducing Work Stress: Effective Ways for a Healthier Work-Life Balance
As someone who works in a corporate environment in the Philippines, I am personally aware of how stress at work can impact our general wellbeing. The daily commute, whether it's by bus or train, only adds to the already existing daily grinds. Recognizing these stressors and taking proactive measures to reduce them are essential for this reason.
Stress Awareness Month is an annual observance that focuses on increasing awareness of the impact of stress on our lives, health, and work. It originated in the United States in 1992 and has since then spread globally. As a young professional in the Philippines, being aware of this commemoration and taking proactive measures to reduce work-related stress can greatly improve our overall well-being and productivity.
Stress Awareness Month is different from the Mental Health Awareness Month commemorated every October. While the latter highlights generally on mental health issues, Stress Awareness Month specifically emphasizes the importance of addressing work-related stress and its impact on our well-being.
Here are some effective ways to reduce stresses at work that have helped me in the past:
1. Set priorities and refrain from multitasking:
In today's fast-paced work environment, it can be tempting to attempt to handle several jobs at once. Certainly, this can lead to feeling overwhelmed and stressed. Instead, make a to-do list and prioritize tasks based on importance and urgency. You can lower your stress levels and boost your productivity by concentrating on one task at a time.
2. Get support from colleagues:
Don't be afraid to ask for help or delegate tasks to colleagues. You don't have to do everything alone, and working collaboratively can actually reduce stress levels. Remember, a healthy work environment is a team effort.
3. Communicate effectively:
Misunderstandings because of miscommunication might result in unwanted work tensions, which can result to added stress. Practice clear and concise communication with your workmates to prevent confusion and misunderstandings from happening.
4. Maintain a healthy work-life balance and practice self-care:
It's essential to maintain a healthy balance between your work and personal life. Make time for activities outside of work that bring you joy, whether it's exercising, reading books or online journals, or spending time with loved ones. Also, take care of yourself physically and mentally by getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and practicing mindfulness techniques like meditation.
5. Take a vacation leave:
Avail your vacation leave credits and relax! Taking time off from work can do wonders for your mental and physical health. Use your vacation leave credits to unwind, relax, and recharge. Whether it's a staycation or a trip to a tourist spots in the province, taking a break from work can help reduce stress and increase productivity upon your return.
To sum up, we should bear in mind that overworking and glorifying busy schedules can have severe consequences for our well-being. This is why we must recognize the significance of Stress Awareness Month and take practical steps to prevent stress from affecting our lives and work. It's crucial to prioritize self-care, effective communication, and seeking help when needed, as these can make a significant difference in our overall stress levels. By creating a healthier and more positive work environment, we can benefit ourselves, our colleagues, and the organization as a whole.
