Five tips for observing candidates months leading up to choosing the right ones

Five tips for observing candidates months leading up to choosing the right ones by Neil Gregori Garen

Are Filipino celebrity candidates genuinely capable of serving the public, or are they using their fame as a shortcut to power? How can we distinguish between those with sincere intentions and those merely capitalizing on their popularity?

As the next election approaches, more celebrities, vloggers, and other popular personalities will likely step into the political spotlight. While their fame can make them seem like strong contenders, it’s important to go beyond the glitz and glamour to assess whether they’re truly fit for public service.

Here are five ways to critically observe these celebrities and other candidates in the months leading up to election day:

Tracking their consistency in advocacy

Many celebrities may suddenly appear involved in charitable causes or community projects as elections draw near. Look for consistency. Have they been actively engaged in these causes long before their candidacy? Or is their involvement a recent development, aimed at gaining favor? True public servants will have a track record of advocacy that reflects long-term commitment, not just election-driven efforts.

Listening for clear, concrete solutions

Watch how the candidate talks about important issues in the Philippines—whether it's poverty, healthcare, education, or climate change. Are they addressing these problems with depth, offering detailed plans and solutions? Or are they relying on vague promises and feel-good rhetoric? Look for candidates who not only identify the problems but also propose practical, well-thought-out solutions.

Observing candidates' actions beyond social media

No one knows everything, not even geniuses. Pay attention to whether the candidate shows a willingness to listen to professionals and experts in various fields. Do they seek advice from people with knowledge in governance, economics, and law? A good leader is one who understands the importance of collaboration and values informed decision-making over emotional or impulsive choices.

Check for genuine community engagement

Are they visible in communities, engaging with real people and addressing grassroots concerns? Or are they mainly relying on their online presence and media exposure to appeal to voters? Candidates who take the time to interact with the community, understand local issues, and listen to the voices of everyday Filipinos are more likely to lead effectively.

Evaluate their transparency and integrity

Fame can sometimes cloud judgment, but how does the candidate handle power and influence? Are they transparent in their actions and consistent in their values? Do they stay true to their promises, or are they quick to change positions depending on public sentiment? A candidate with integrity will remain committed to serving the public, regardless of the popularity or pressure they face.

By carefully observing these behaviors in the months leading up to the election, you’ll be better equipped to choose leaders who are not only famous but also capable, knowledgeable, and genuinely dedicated to serving the Filipino people—whether they are celebrity candidates or other individuals stepping into the political arena.
