This 2023 will probably have more concert lineups since Young Pilipinas is slowly adapting to the new normal. In my previous article, I shared some tips about what Young Filipinos should prepare before attending concerts in the Philippines. This time, I’ll share some lessons I learned after I attended Seventeen’s Be the Sun Bulacan and Ben&Ben’s Homecoming concerts last year.

1. Planning Ahead

Planning the logistics will reduce the hassle of attending a concert especially if it is your first time. One month before the event, my friend and I were already preparing since the venue of Seventeen’s concert is in Philippine Arena which is 39 kilometers away from us. Our biggest concern at that time was our transportation and we anticipated that it will not be easy due to the surge of attendees. Fortunately, we were able to book a shuttle service organized by Carats (Seventeen’s fandom). We also filed for leave from our work a day before the concert so we’ll have enough rest.

Location ocular is also advisable but not necessary. It was not possible for us, so we researched online and asked for tips from our acquaintances and friends who already attended an event in Philippine Arena. We also made sure to be updated on the concert organizers’ advisories.

2. Not Overpacking

Bringing many things to this kind of event is not advisable so you should only pack the essentials. Overpacking will be a burden mainly if the ticket you purchased is in the standing section. I learned to strategize what kind of bag I should use and prioritize the things I’ll bring with me. It is also important to check the prohibited items for the concert, so you’ll not be stressed out about surrendering your things in security.

3. Physical Rest

Sleep adequately before the day of the concert. Having enough rest is a must since long queuing is expected if the event will be held in a big venue. When I attended Ben&Ben concert, my friend and I were standing for 6 consecutive hours. We lined up for 2 hours, and the concert duration was 4 hours! The standing and walking did not end there because we had to commute to go home. Luckily, I had enough rest before that day, so I was not so drained after.

4. Mindfulness and Alertness

Seventeen’s concert in Bulacan was attended by around 40,000 people while Ben&Ben’s concert had about 65,000 attendees. It is undeniably exciting to watch and hear your favorite artist live but being mindful of your belongings and being alert to your surroundings should also be your priority. We were with thousands of attendees and the queuing for both Seventeen and Ben&Ben’s concert was unorganized. No marshals were assisting the attendees, so we were on our own outside the venue. Thankfully, Carats and Liwanags (Ben&Ben’s fandom) are decent crowds, so there were no stampedes before, during, or after the concert.

5. Enjoy

Young Pilipinas and even the whole world were deprived of face-to-face events for two years due to the pandemic. Enjoy every moment of the concert especially if you do not have the luxury of always attending these kinds of events. Sing and dance with your favorite artist during the concert and imprint your favorite moments in your memory. Take pictures and videos so you can look back to this one for the books moment in your life.

After I witnessed my favorite music artists’ live performances, I was able to take a break from the reality of life. It somehow reduced my stress that week. Even for a short moment, I’m free not to think of my responsibilities, bills, and existential crisis in my 20s.

Attend concerts, gigs, exhibits, or whatever will make you happy. Take a rest for your sanity.
